Unlike in other parts of the country the burning problem of castism has never been as acute in Tripura. The curse of castism never figures in the long list of problems that plague Tripura and this is reflected in the total absence of caste-based violence and the complete freedom enjoyed by the so-called lower caste people among Hindus to practice their religion and rituals based on it . The people living in Harijan colonies in different parts of the state have been freely organizing their ‘Durga Puja’ and other religious worships and festivals freely without any undue interference from so-called upper castes in sharp contrast with mainstream Indian states, specilly UP , Bihar , Haryana etc.

This heartening reality was evident yet again as the inhabitants of Harizan colony enthusiastically observed the ‘Chhat Puja’ in different parts of the state including the Banamalipur assembly constituency represented by veteran Congress leader Gopal Roy. For the benefit of the Hindu uresidents of Harizan colony in his constituency , Gopal Roy had sanctioned the construction of a ‘Ghat’ of flight steps to and from the Katakhal river that flows on the northern part of Banamalipur constituency.

The construction of this ‘Ghat’, a longstanding demand of the Hindu residents of the Harizan colony, had recently been completed and it was inaugurated on the bank of the Katakhal river by Gopal Roy himself amid great enthusiasm among people. Sources from the area said that nearly all the residents of the Harizan colony in Banamalipur enthusiastically attended the inauguration of the ‘Ghat’ and sincerely appreciated the role of MLA Gopal Roy in fulfilling their longstanding demand. Apart from the Harizan residents , other people from nearby areas also attended the inauguration programme and paid tributes to MLA Gopal Roy.
