Bangladesh’s interim government head Md Yunus’s deliberate anti-India stance and provocative actions to protect his own position and that of his sponsored National Citizens Party (NCP) in the run-up to the elections in February next year have sparked a nationwide controversy. At at time of economic distress spawned by all-round lawlessness , massive fire accidents in Chittagong port and Dhaka airport, Yunus is allegedly trying to deflect criticism of his regime by resorting to anti-India posturing.
As part of his devious game plan Md Yunsu has recently handed over a map of Bangladesh that includes parts of India’s northeastern states to the visiting Pakistani joint chiefs of staff committee chairman General Sahir Shamshad Mirza during the latter’s recent visit to Dhaka. He had handed over a gift to the visiting Pakistani general on which a map of Bangladesh showing parts of India’s territory as under Bangladesh’s possession had been inscribed. The government of India has not yet formally issued a statement on this issue but this has drawn attention of the government.
Apart from this, the controversial Islamic preacher notorious Jakir Naik who is known for his constant vitriol against Indian and poisonous propaganda against all other religious faiths will arrive in Bangladesh on more than a monthlong visit in the middle of November at the invitation of Yunus’s government. Jakir who fled Indian in the year 2014 was also proscribed by the Sheikh Hasina led Awami League government way back in 2016 but Yunus has extended an invitation to him for spewing venom against the religious minorities of Bangladesh as well as to spook India. Jakir will arrive in Dhaka on November 16 and will stay in the country till December 31 and will be given a red carpet welcome.
Sources from Bangladesh said that the except Jamat-e-Islami all other political parties including the BNP have expessed serious reservations over these two steps of the Yunus . The parties and their leadership have not yet gone public on the issue but have privately resented the decisions. While speaking to a media outlet on condition of anonymity a senior BNP leader said that these two actions of Yunus are designed to spook India and give deliberate provocation which in the long term can not be good for Bangladesh. “These actions serve no purpose for Bangladesh’s vital interests but will further strain Indo-Bangla relations at a time when we need help from India all the more; he has done this deliberately to curry favour with the Jamat and fundamentalist elementsa as well as to help his own party, the NCP” said the BNP leader, refusing to be quoted. He added that with alienation from people growing , Yunus is desperately trying to hold on to a position of power in the post-election scenario but the majority people are increasingly upset with Yunus and his activities.
