Tripura Civil Service Officers (TCS) Association representatives today met the Chief Minister to demand immediate action following a violent attack on government officers at Santirbazar Market in Kamalpur, Dhalai district on 23 October 2025. The delegation called for the prompt arrest and exemplary punishment of those responsible, full government coverage of the officers’ medical expenses, and stronger security measures for field-level officers performing executive duties.

According to the association’s submission, TCS officers including Abhijit Majumder (BDO, Salema), Dhananjoy Chakma (TCS, Deputy Collector, Kamalpur) and Animesh Saha (TA, Salema RD Block) were assaulted while carrying out their official responsibilities to maintain law and order during a strike-related disturbance. The letter, signed by Asim Saha, General Secretary of the Tripura Civil Service Officers’ Association, describes serious injuries sustained by the officers and warns that repeated assaults on public functionaries will demoralize the administrative workforce and undermine delivery of government schemes.

Chief Minister expressed deep sympathy for the injured officers and assured the association that those responsible will not be spared, they will be brought under law and will be given exemplary punishment. When asked about the timeline, the Chief Minister said, just wait and see, adding that the state government would ensure justice and safety for its officers. He urged the injured officials not to be demoralised and offered the government’s support for their treatment.

In their charter of demands, the association also urged that whenever Executive Magistrates are requisitioned, district and sub-divisional authorities must ensure specific, documented security arrangements, including assignment of adequate police personnel and mention of those details in the requisition letters. The association insisted that ensuring officers safety is essential for the uninterrupted delivery of public services to the state’s residents.

Local reactions have been anguished and outspoken. Voices close to the injured officers say the wounds are not only physical injuries to Abhijit Majumder and others currently hospitalized, but wounds borne by their families and the wider community. One representative plea translated from the association’s statement reads:

“These injuries are not only Abhijit’s or the other hospitalized officers’. The wounds are of our entire state. Their pain is matched only by the suffering of their children, parents and relatives. Time may pass and scars may fade on the body, but families will live with these marks forever. If the victims’ friends or relatives, crushed by despair at lack of justice, turn to revenge, who will be responsible? Is it only the state? No, we all are responsible: those who stay silent, those who fear speaking up, those who celebrate democracy only in festivals but remain silent when justice is needed. We must not forget the examples of courage among us; yesterday someone risked life to save many on a train without asking who owned what. Today, blood flows and the nation must respond with justice and dignity.

Civil society groups, legal experts and opposition figures have urged a transparent investigation and immediate compensation for victims. Human rights advocates stressed that protecting officers who act in the public interest is vital to preserve rule of law, and called for clear accountability for failures in security arrangements on the ground.

The Tripura Civil Service Officers’ Association has warned of further protests or legal action if the government’s response is not swift and visible. For now, the state administration says it is investigating, medical care is being provided to the injured, and the Chief Minister has reiterated his commitment to both justice for the victims and stronger protective measures for officers in the field.
