A major controversy has erupted in South Tripura following allegations that police lathi-charged students of Ramraibari High School in Jolaibari on Wednesday during a protest demanding the withdrawal of transfer orders for two teachers. According to eyewitnesses, several students were injured when police allegedly used force to disperse the demonstrators. Reports indicate that over 12 students sustained injuries and were taken to the Ramraibari Primary Health Centre for treatment.
However, the Tripura Police have officially denied these allegations. In a press release issued by the Office of the Director General of Police, the department stated that claims of police using force were incorrect and not based on facts.
The statement reads: A few news clips and social media posts have been circulated alleging that some students got injured due to use of force by the police at Ramraibari High School under Baikhora Police Station in South Tripura District. This is to clarify that there was no use of force by Police as has been portrayed in the media. Tripura Police remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens. The allegation of assault of school students is incorrect and not based on facts.”
Despite the police clarification, local residents and student protesters have continued to allege that Baikhora Police Station OC Bishnu Chandra Das and ASI Moron Baidya ordered and carried out the lathi-charge inside the school premises. The alleged incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with locals demanding strong action against the officers and an independent inquiry into the matter.
The episode has also reignited debate over law and order in Tripura, with opposition voices accusing the administration of using force against peaceful student protests while failing to tackle serious social issues such as drug abuse. Public outrage continues to grow, and civil society groups have called for the state government’s immediate intervention to ensure accountability and justice.
