Tension erupted at Ramraibari High School in Jolaibari on Wednesday after police allegedly lathi-charged students who were staging a protest demanding the withdrawal of transfer orders for two of their teachers. According to local sources, the students had initially held a road blockade on Tuesday over the same issue and resumed their agitation today by locking the school gates and continuing their protest inside the premises.

Police personnel reportedly arrived at the spot and asked the students to withdraw their agitation. However, when the students refused to back down, officers from Baikhora Police Station, allegedly on the instruction of Officer-in-Charge Bishnu Chandra Das, resorted to force to disperse the protesters. The lathi-charge was reportedly led by ASI Moron Baidya, leading to injuries to more than 12 students.

The injured students were immediately taken to Ramraibari Primary Health Centre for medical treatment. The incident has sparked widespread outrage among locals, teachers, and students alike, who have strongly condemned the police action inside the school premises. Many have demanded strict disciplinary action against OC Bishnu Chandra Das and ASI Moron Baidya for their alleged role in the assault on students.

Eyewitnesses described the police action as unprovoked and brutal, saying that the students were peacefully demonstrating for their teachers reinstatement. The attack has raised serious concerns over the state of law and order in Tripura, with many questioning the government’s priorities.

Critics have accused the administration of using excessive force against peaceful protests while failing to curb the rising menace of drug abuse in the state. The government came to power in 2018 promising the 7th Pay Commission, a permanent solution for 10,323 teachers, and a drug-free Tripura. But now, in 2025, Tripura has turned into a haven for drugs, said a local resident.

Allegations have also surfaced regarding the flow of drugs through new routes, reportedly even through cargo like ‘Wagner’ containers, while the police remain silent on tracing the source. Citizens have voiced frustration that while police remain inactive against such crimes, they act swiftly and violently against students, unemployed youths, and protesters demanding justice.

As public outrage grows, many are calling for immediate state government intervention and a judicial inquiry into the police excesses. The incident has once again highlighted the growing sense of anarchy and suppression across Tripura, prompting civil society and conscious citizens to raise their voices before the situation deteriorates further.
