The newly established Neurology Department at Agartala Government Medical College and GBP Hospital is rapidly emerging as a model healthcare service in Tripura’s medical landscape. Over the past few months, the overall environment of GBP Hospital has seen a visible transformation, the premises are now noticeably cleaner and more organized than ever before. Despite facing an acute shortage of healthcare personnel, the quality of medical service has shown significant improvement.

However, experts point out that the number of doctors, nurses, and other health staff needs to be increased, along with ensuring better rest facilities for healthcare workers and smoother communication between hospital staff and patients families. One persistent issue is that doctors often do not receive diagnostic reports on time, causing delays in treatment. This, according to medical insiders, remains one of the biggest operational challenges across various wards, including the medicine department.

In contrast, the new Neurology Department stands out as a symbol of excellence and dedication. Anyone visiting this section of the hospital is bound to be impressed by its modern interior, immaculate cleanliness, and patient-friendly service attitude, elements that could easily be mistaken for a high-end private hospital or even a top facility like Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital.

Led by Dr Abir Lal Nath, the department’s Head of Neurology, the unit operates like a closely-knit and deeply dedicated team. Dr. Nath proudly mentions that the department is now equipped with nearly all modern neurological care facilities. “Every day, numerous patients come here for treatment. Our mission is simple, to ensure that every patient goes home with a smile and a sense of relief, said Dr. Nath.

At present, the department has 25 beds, 5 nurses, and 3 doctors. Despite heavy patient inflow, each team member works with remarkable sincerity and compassion. The relentless effort of the nurses and the responsiveness of the doctors have together created a benchmark in public healthcare service. Dr. Nath further stated that with the addition of more nurses and doctors, the existing infrastructure could serve at least 25 more patients effectively.

He emphasized that the doctors here not only treat ailments but also build a deep human connection with each patient and their family members. This humane approach has become the defining strength of the department.

Dr. Abir Lal Nath and his team’s initiative is now seen as a turning point in Tripura’s public health system, proving that government hospitals, too, can deliver top-tier medical services comparable to private healthcare institutions. Their performance so far has already passed its first crucial test, earning appreciation from patients and administrators alike.

Now, the people of Tripura are hopeful that patients with neurological issues will no longer need to travel outside the state for advanced treatment.
