Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Tuesday paid tributes to police and security personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty and said that the police, armed and border forces are not only responsible for maintaining law and order but also play a vital role in safeguarding the sovereignty and integrity of the nation.

Speaking at a programme organised to mark Police Commemoration Day at the Manoranjan Debbarma Smriti Stadium here, Saha said the nation would always remain indebted to the courage and sacrifice of security personnel who upheld their oath to protect the country even at the cost of their lives.

“On 21 October, the country observes Police Commemoration Day to honour the brave personnel who sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation. The police, armed forces and border forces are working tirelessly not only to ensure internal security but also to safeguard the sovereignty and unity of the country,” he said.

Recalling the origin of the observance, he said the day commemorates the sacrifice of 10 Indian police personnel who were killed on 21 October 1959 in an ambush by Chinese troops at Hot Springs in Ladakh. The Government of India has been observing the day since 1961.

The Chief Minister said that between 2024 and 31 August 2025, 191 police and security personnel across the country were martyred. Tripura lost two of its personnel during this period—Tripura Police constable David Darlong and Tripura State Rifles jawan Milon Debbarma.

“Constable David Darlong lost his life on 12 October 2024 when his vehicle skidded off a deep gorge during duty at Khedacherra. TSR jawan Milon Debbarma died in an accident on duty at Kailashahar on 31 July 2025. I pay my humble tributes to both of them for their selfless service,” Saha said.

Senior officials including Chief Secretary J K Sinha and Director General of Police Anurag were present at the event.
