A political storm has erupted within Tripura’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) following an explosive outburst by Boxanagar MLA Md. Tafajjal Hossain against two of the party’s top leaders, former Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Union Minister Pratima Bhoumik, while openly lauding the leadership of State BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee.
Within 24 hours of his remarks, the BJP’s state leadership served Tafajjal with a show-cause notice for alleged gross indiscipline and violation of party conduct, demanding an explanation within five days.
However, the disciplinary move has sparked internal confusion and criticism, as another senior leader, Shudangshu Das, who recently alleged that party politicians are taking money from contractors as source money, has not been served a notice. This perceived double standard has raised eyebrows and triggered heated debate within party circles.
In contradictory action, in a swift reaction on Saturday evening, the BJP state office issued the notice signed on behalf of the State President. The letter accused Tafajjal Hossain of making critical remarks against senior leaders during a public meeting at Boxanagar in Sepahijala district on October 18, thereby causing embarrassment to the party’s image and leadership.
The notice also claimed that Tafajjal had complained about senior leaders not sanctioning public funds on his request, which the party viewed as a public airing of internal matters.
Earlier, Tafajjal had taken to social media with a strongly worded post, venting frustration over what he described as neglect and internal favoritism within the party.
He recalled his long-standing loyalty, writing that since 2016 he had risked his life for the BJP, supporting Biplab Kumar Deb, Pratima Bhoumik, and Rajib Bhattacharjee through turbulent political times.
> “I have built the organization facing CPM cadres eye-to-eye. Today, anti-Left supporters in Tripura have finally found their breath. But you cannot publicly insult our life-giver,”
Tafajjal wrote, hinting at betrayal and disrespect toward grassroots leaders and dedicated workers.
In another controversial statement, Tafajjal condemned the placement of a minister’s photograph above the image of Maa Tripureshwari, calling it an insult to Hindu sentiment.
He demanded immediate action against those responsible, alleging that some individuals are playing with religious emotions to please ministers, a move he described as deeply offensive and unacceptable.
While fiercely criticizing some senior leaders, Tafajjal praised BJP State President Rajib Bhattacharjee for his humility and accessibility.
He ended his post with a mix of allegiance and rebellion, declaring:
> “Biplab Kumar Deb Zindabad, Didi Pratima Bhoumik Zindabad, Rajib Bhattacharjee Zindabad, BJP Zindabad, Mirzafar Murdabad.”
The slogans reflected loyalty to the party but also a clear protest against what he termed internal politics demoralizing genuine karyakartas.
The incident has intensified factional turbulence within the Tripura BJP. Several grassroots workers and local leaders have privately expressed sympathy for Tafajjal’s frustration, saying his words mirror the suppressed voices within the organization.
Political analysts suggest that the BJP leadership is now walking a tightrope, trying to enforce discipline while managing growing discontent among its own ranks.
Meanwhile, the lack of disciplinary action against Shudangshu Das despite his corruption-related allegations has fueled speculation of inconsistency and internal bias, with many party insiders questioning the leadership’s selective approach to discipline.
The unfolding developments have made it clear that all is not well within Tripura’s ruling BJP and the Tafajjal storm may be just the beginning of deeper internal rifts surfacing ahead of future political battles.
