NMC Approves Four New PG Seats for Agartala Government Medical College, Major Boost to Medical Education and Healthcare in Tripura

In a remarkable stride for Tripura’s medical education and healthcare infrastructure, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved four new postgraduate (PG) seats for Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) starting from the 2025–26 academic session.

The approval includes: 2 seats in MD Radio-Diagnosis and 2 seats in MD Respiratory Medicine.

This milestone marks a significant step towards enhancing advanced medical training and specialist healthcare services in the state.

According to sources, in Financial Year 2025–26 the number of BDS seats at Agartala Government Dental College (AGDC) has been increased from 50 to 63, with an additional 13 seats under the EWS category, effective from the 2025–26 session.

With this, both AGMC and AGDC continue to expand opportunities for aspiring doctors and dentists in Tripura.

Highlights of Achievements in Financial Year 2024–25

Undergraduate (UG) seats at AGMC increased to 150 for the 2024–25 academic year. Four new PG seats were added in the Obstetrics & Gynaecology Department, raising the total PG capacity at AGMC to 89 seats. Three new PG seats were introduced in the Radiotherapy Department. Three PG seats were added in Community Medicine.

The sources said that organ transplantation services successfully started at AGMC & GBP Hospital, marking a major medical breakthrough for the state.

The State Government initiated the process of signing an MoU with MOHAN Foundation to further strengthen organ transplantation programs. 32 Senior Residents were redesignated as Assistant Professors across various departments. 8 Associate Professors were promoted to Professor level, and 6 Assistant Professors were redesignated to Associate Professor posts. 2 Associate Professors (Super Specialty) were recruited through TPSC. 9 Super Specialty services are now fully functional at AGMC, Cardiology, CTVS, Nephrology, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, GI Surgery, Neurology, and Gastroenterology. 15 Medical Officers were absorbed from THS to TMES in AGMC. 1 Assistant Professor joined the GI Surgery Department. 3 Assistant Professors were promoted to Associate Professor on an ad-hoc basis, and 1 Tutor was promoted to Assistant Professor on an ad-hoc basis.

The continued expansion of AGMC and AGDC highlights the Government of Tripura’s commitment to improving medical education, training, and specialized healthcare services. With the addition of new PG seats and ongoing infrastructural and academic upgrades, Tripura is steadily emerging as a key medical education hub in Northeast India.
