In a bizarre turn to growing allegations of rampant corruption and bribe taking by government officers, employees and , specially engineers, the Unakoti district contractors association today accused Ranajay Debbarma, executive engineer of division-6 of water resource department of massive corruption and bribe taking . “He puts payment of all our bills on hold unless he is paid bribes of 20% and this is absolute extortion by misusing official power” said office bearers of the contractors association in an interaction with the media.

Recently the corrupt executive engineer Ranajay Debbarma filed a complaint with police that there had been attempt to attack him physically by the contractors. Dismissing the complaint as ‘absolutely baseless and false’ the senior functionaries of Unakoti contractors association represented by Bhaskar Roy, Ajit Acharjee, Dipendra Malakar, Bimalendu Paul, Subrata Ghosh and Prashanta Sarkar-all veteran contractors and builder- said that the allegation had been cooked up by Ranajay Debbarma to deflect attention from his corrupt practices. They met in deputation with the police and told media persons in the interaction that Ranajay had stage-managed the so-called attack on him and ‘he must prove that there was actually any attack on him , otherwise we will take legal action against him’, adding that Ranajay is taking minister’s name only to save his skin.

The senior contractors said that before the just-concluded ‘Durga Puja’ the state government had sanctioned Rs 12 crores for payment of bills of contractors in Unakoti but ‘not a single paise was paid to us by Ranajay’. They asserted that unless action is taken against corrupt Ranajay Debbarma and huge outstanding bills of contractors are paid, there will be a massive protest programme and even legal action.
