A heated debate has surfaced on social media after photos circulated showing East Tripura MP Kriti Singh Debbarma hosting Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha at her Delhi residence with a risa spread on the table, the same traditional cloth that recently sparked controversy.
Supporters of CPI(M) leader and former minister Jitendra Choudhury have taken to social media to ask pointed questions to the BJP’s Janajati Morcha. They recalled that the Morcha had earlier staged protests and surrounded Jitendra Choudhury’s misuse over the risa and launched strong online campaigns condemning him.
Now, those same voices are asking whether the BJP’s Janajati Morcha will similarly demonstrate against their own party leaders MP Kriti Singh Debbarma, who seen using the risa in an informal setting.
“Will the Janajati Morcha now surround the vehicles of their own leaders and chant ‘Go back Kriti Singh’? Will the BJP Tripura’s official page issue any statement of condemnation like before?” social media users wrote in sarcastic posts.
Many netizens also questioned the “double standards” of certain BJP supporters, calling them “blind followers” who only target opposition figures while ignoring similar acts by their own leaders.
The controversy once again brings the cultural and political symbolism of the risa, a traditional handwoven cloth deeply respected in Tripura’s tribal society into the center of a political storm.
No official reaction has yet been made by BJP Tripura or the Janajati Morcha on the matter.
