Youth Electrocuted to Death in Kalyanpur: Public Anger Erupts Over Negligence, Power Office Vandalized, Police Resort to Lathicharge

A tragic incident occurred at West Ghilatali Manipuri Basti under Kalyanpur Police Station, where a young man named Ajay Debnath lost his life after coming in contact with a live electric wire. The shocking incident has sparked massive outrage among local residents, who blame the negligence and inefficiency of the Kalyanpur Electricity Office for the unfortunate death.

According to eyewitnesses, locals alleged that despite repeated complaints about hanging and damaged electric wires in the area, officials of the electricity department ignored the matter for days. Following the tragic death, the enraged villagers gathered in front of the Kalyanpur Power Office and started protesting. The demonstration soon turned violent as angry residents vandalized parts of the office, expressing their fury over the department’s carelessness.

To bring the situation under control, police were compelled to resort to lathicharge, during which several protesters sustained minor injuries. Locals accused the authorities of showing more aggression toward the victims’ relatives instead of holding the negligent officials accountable.

Residents further complained that the Kalyanpur Electricity Office has long been notorious for poor service, citing that phone lines remain unreachable, officials are often unavailable, and no prompt action is taken in emergency situations. One angry local remarked,

> “If there were an award for the worst electricity office, it should go to the Kalyanpur Electric Office!”

Citizens have urged Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath to intervene immediately, take strict action against those responsible, and ensure that the bereaved family receives justice and compensation.

The situation in Kalyanpur remains tense, but under police control as authorities begin an investigation into the incident.
