Despite the official ban put on fighting elections in the country , the ousted Awami League leaders and workers have kept up their activism across Bangladesh in a low key manner by taking out processions and holding road-side rallies over the past several months. In many cities across the country including the capital Dhaka , groups of Awami League workers led by local level leaders are often seen briskly walking along roads shouting slogans against the interim government. Sources from Bangladesh said that the interim government has made itself so unpopular by this time that they do not dare to go beyond a certain limit in taking action against the Awami League which is still considerably popular with a large section of people. Apart from this, the Awami League is fighting a large part of its battle in the social media.
The fight in the social media has taken a new turn with ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wajed Joy releasing names and addresses of altogether 370 Awami League leaders and workers slain by fundamentalist elements over the past year since the interim government had come to power. In his comment Sajeeb Wajed Joy said that the actual death toll of Awami League workers and leaders has already reached 400 but specific names and addresses of only 370 are available.
Interestingly , none from the ruling interim government has as yet reacted to the statement on death toll released by Sajeeb Wajed Joy in the social media. Sources from Bangladesh said that many twists and turns in the political situation are awaited before elections in February are held as the Awami League candidates have decided to enter the fray as independents in many of the 300 constituencies for the National Assembly.
