A pall of gloom has descended on Panisagar, a town in North Tripura, after a 14-month-old girl was found brutally murdered and buried in a marshy paddy field late on Saturday night. Police have arrested a 44-year-old relative of the child in connection with the heinous crime.

The accused, identified as Jaynal Uddin (44), was known to the family and reportedly a frequent visitor to the house. The incident unfolded after Uddin took the infant out for a walk on Saturday evening and failed to return. When the child's anxious parents alerted authorities, a massive search operation was launched.

After hours of searching, the police search team eventually discovered the child’s body hidden under the earthen surface of a nearby paddy field. The victim’s parents have alleged that the infant was sexually assaulted before being killed, a claim the police are currently investigating.

Uddin, who had initially absconded, was tracked down to Nilambazar in lower Assam and subsequently arrested by the police team. He has been brought back to Panisagar and is scheduled to be produced before the local court on Monday as the investigation into this shocking case continues. The tragedy highlights the vulnerability of children even within their family circles.
