CPI(M) Tripura State Secretary Jitendra Chaudhury has strongly condemned the alleged attacks by BJP-backed miscreants during the preparations for Birchandra Manu Martyrs’ Day and described the role of the District Magistrate Muhammad Sajad, IAS and Superintendent of Police Shri Mourya Krishna C, IPS of South Tripura as a disgrace to the name of All India Civil Service officers.

In a video message released on Saturday evening, Chaudhury alleged that BJP miscreants unleashed a wave of violence and terror in the Birchandra Nagar and surrounding areas from the night of October 11, aiming to disrupt the Martyrs’ Day observance scheduled for October 12. “What kind of democracy and rule of law exists in Tripura if civil and police officials act as puppets of the ruling party’s goons?” he questioned.

Chaudhury stated that around 12:30 a.m. on October 11, BJP-backed miscreants set fire to the CPI(M) branch office at Patichhari Dropgate Bazaar. He pointed out that despite prior intimation to both the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police regarding the event, no preventive or protective measures were taken.

He further alleged that the BJP workers created a reign of terror throughout the night by hurling bombs and spreading panic in the Birchandra Bazar area. “Residents spent the whole night in fear, unable to sleep, while the administration and police remained silent spectators,” Chaudhury said. “History will never forgive such officers who have brought shame upon the Civil Services by siding with lawlessness,” he added.

Raising sharp questions, Chaudhury asked why the BJP was obstructing the observance of Martyrs’ Day. He reminded that the day commemorates Dulal Debnath, a Congress supporter who was killed in police firing during the Congress coalition government in 1988. “Dulal Debnath was never associated with the BJP, nor did he ever hear of the party in his lifetime. Then why is the BJP trying to stop a ceremony held in his memory?” he questioned.

Paying solemn tribute to the eleven martyrs of Birchandra Manu, Chaudhury described the attacks as an act of barbarism and political savagery. He said, “This is nothing but BJP’s brutal behavior. One cannot expect even the slightest sense of civility from such elements.”

Chaudhury also warned that the BJP’s days in power are numbered. “Let the BJP’s goons know, you cannot crush the Left through violence. The people of Tripura have already rejected your barbaric politics. On the 28th, the people will ring the final bell of your departure,” he asserted.

Calling the BJP a “barbaric and demonic party,” the CPI(M) leader said the people’s patience is wearing thin and democracy in Tripura is under severe threat due to such administrative complicity.

Background:

Birchandra Manu Martyrs’ Day is observed every year on October 12 in memory of eleven CPI(M) workers who were brutally killed on this day in 1988 while preparing to hoist the red flag at Birchandra Manu. The victims were murdered by an armed Congress-backed group during the Congress coalition regime.

The martyrs were: Com. Sreedam Pal, Chhatramani Debbarma, Sukharanjan Murasing, Sudhir Debnath, Gandhirai Murasing, Nitai Sarkar, Bhadramani Murasing, Birlal Das, Nityahari Murasing, Lalit Noatia, and Purnachandra Noatia.

The Birchandra Manu massacre of 1988 remains one of the darkest chapters in Tripura’s political history and continues to be remembered as a symbol of sacrifice for democracy and resistance against oppression.
