A disturbing social trend appears to be taking root in Tripura, as reports of extramarital relationships and associated disputes continue to surface across the state. Hardly a month passes without a police complaint or legal case arising from such issues in one or another police station in Tripura. In many cases, these private matters spill into social media, creating public controversies. Police sources admit that in several instances, they are compelled to take complaints even beyond strict legal jurisdiction due to mounting social and political pressure.
The latest such incident has been reported from Boxanagar under the jurisdiction of the Kalamchoura Police Station, where a businessman was caught in an alleged extramarital affair that has set the locality abuzz.
According to reports, Babul Banik, a local businessman from Boxanagar market, was detained by police after his wife caught him red-handed with a married woman, identified as Asmita Deb, late on Thursday night.
Local sources informed that Banik, who has been running his business in the area for several years, had recently exhibited unusual behavior, arousing his wife's suspicion. To verify her doubts, she began keeping a close watch on his movements. On Thursday night, her suspicion was confirmed when she allegedly found her husband in a compromising position with another woman. A heated altercation broke out on the spot, soon drawing the attention of local residents.
As the situation grew tense, locals informed the police, who promptly arrived and detained Banik. His wife subsequently lodged a formal written complaint at the Kalamchoura Police Station.
A fellow trader, speaking on condition of anonymity, remarked, “Babul Banik is a well-known face in the market. Everyone is shocked to hear about such an allegation against him.”
Speaking to reporters, Banik’s wife said tearfully, “I had been suspecting him for a long time but lacked proof. Today, I saw it with my own eyes. I never imagined a husband could betray his family and children in such a way.”
Police sources confirmed that preliminary questioning has taken place and that further investigation is underway. “If the allegations are found to be true, appropriate legal action will be taken,” an officer stated.
The incident has sparked widespread debate in Boxanagar, with some residents terming it a personal matter, while others believe such behavior reflects a deepening moral and social crisis in the community.
As of now, Babul Banik remains in police custody, while his wife and family are said to be in a state of emotional distress.
This case adds to the growing list of similar incidents across Tripura, prompting social observers to warn that extramarital relationships are fast becoming a new social malady in the state, eroding family values and community trust.
