In two separate shocking incidents that have shaken Tripura, a teenage girl was abducted from her home in the capital city of Agartala, while another 13-year-old girl was subjected to a brutal assault in Kakraban. These back-to-back crimes have raised serious concerns about women’s safety and the law and order situation in the state.
According to police and local sources, the first incident took place in the Indranagar Banglar Math area around 3 AM on Friday night, when a group of four to five unidentified miscreants arrived in a car near the Agartala Milk Dairy locality. They stormed into the residence of a teenage girl, allegedly threatening the family to open the door. Out of fear, the door was opened and the men forcibly entered, attempting to kidnap the girl. When her family members tried to resist, they were allegedly attacked and injured by the assailants, who then dragged the girl away in their vehicle.
Panic spread rapidly throughout the area as the news broke. With the help of neighbours, the girl’s family rushed to the NCC Police Station and lodged a formal abduction case.
Speaking to the media about the case, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pranjit Malakar confirmed the incident and stated that police have launched a statewide manhunt to locate the abducted girl and apprehend the kidnappers. “Messages have been circulated to all police stations in the state, and we are confident of rescuing the girl soon,” he said.
The brazen nature of the crime, an abduction from within a home in the dead of night has triggered outrage among residents, who expressed their deep concern over the deteriorating law and order situation. “If criminals can storm into a house and kidnap a minor girl in the middle of the night, it shows how unsafe the state has become,” said a local resident. The victim’s family remains in shock and fear, anxiously awaiting the safe return of their daughter.
In another disturbing case, a 13-year-old schoolgirl from Kakraban police station area was attacked on Thursday afternoon while returning home from school. The accused, identified as Bikash Debbarma (20) of Tohidhum Debbarma Para, allegedly dragged the girl into a nearby forest and attempted to sexually assault her. The terrified minor resisted and somehow managed to escape, running home in tears to inform her family.
The girl’s father lodged a complaint at the Tulamura Police Station on Friday. Acting swiftly, police arrested Bikash Debbarma from his residence early Friday morning. The accused was produced before the court on Saturday, where he was remanded to judicial custody.
Both incidents have sparked widespread condemnation across the state. Social activists and women’s rights groups have demanded strong action against the accused and urged the government to take immediate measures to ensure the safety of women and minors.
These back-to-back cases — an abduction in the heart of Agartala and an assault in rural Kakraban, serve as grim reminders of the growing vulnerability of young girls in Tripura. Citizens have called for increased police patrolling, strict enforcement of law, and swift justice to restore public confidence and ensure that such heinous acts do not recur.
