A major administrative shake-up has struck Tripura Police following widespread criticism over the investigation into the Hejamara incident, where BJP Janajati Morcha’s rally was attacked allegedly by TIPRA Motha supporters. As per official sources, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sidai Mohanpur Police Station, Himadri Sarkar, has been transferred overnight, while the investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Dilu Jamatia, has been suspended.
The decision came shortly after all accused persons in the Hejamara attack case were granted bail by the court, which reportedly infuriated the top brass of the state police as well as the ruling political leadership.
According to police sources, the incident occurred on September 21 at Hejamara under Sidai Police Station. The BJP Janajati Morcha had organized a public meeting, where Member of Parliament Biplab Kumar Deb was scheduled to attend as the chief guest. However, before the event began, a group of unruly TIPRA Motha supporters allegedly attacked the venue, vandalized decorations, and physically assaulted BJP Janajati Morcha State Vice-President Mangal Debbarma. A journalist present at the scene was also attacked.
Following the incident, BJP leaders lodged an FIR at Sidai Police Station, registered as Case No. 62/2025. Sub-Inspector Dilu Jamatia was assigned as the investigating officer. A few suspects were arrested and sent to court. However, during the second hearing on Thursday, the accused were granted bail. This development reportedly angered senior BJP leaders, leading to swift punitive action against the police officers in charge.
The immediate transfer of OC Himadri Sarkar and suspension of SI Dilu Jamatia has triggered discontent within the police force. Many officers, particularly at the OC and Sub-Inspector level, have expressed deep concern, saying such actions create an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty in law enforcement.
A senior police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “Such instant punitive measures make it extremely difficult for officers to work freely. We are being made scapegoats for political dissatisfaction.”
Observers note that this episode reflects growing tension within the ruling alliance, comprising BJP, IPFT, and TIPRA Motha.
