The Tripura Police has officially clarified that the much-discussed case of an alleged gang rape of a woman in Amtali under West Tripura District is not a case of sexual assault, but a false claim made under intoxication. The statement came through a press release from the Office of the Director General of Police (DGP), Tripura, following widespread social media posts and media reports about the incident.

According to the clarification, on October 10, 2025, a video surfaced on social media showing a woman admitted to GBP Hospital with allegations that she had been gang-raped and later abandoned in a jungle. Acting swiftly, Amtali Police initiated an inquiry. A team of female officers visited the hospital, where the woman voluntarily stated that she had consumed alcohol on her own and could not remember what she had said earlier.

Police claimed that the lady categorically denied being raped by anyone. The woman’s statement was later re-recorded before a woman Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) and a female Executive Magistrate in the presence of doctors at AGMC & GBP Hospital. She once again denied any sexual assault or physical attack. Medical examination reports also confirmed that no signs of rape or physical injury were found on her body.

The DGP’s office criticized certain media channels for spreading false and unverified information and appealed to the press to report only verified facts to prevent misinformation.

However, several unanswered questions continue to trouble the public.

Locals have raised doubts about how the woman’s hair was cut short, if there was no assault, and how she was brought to the IGM Hospital in the first place before being shifted to GBP Hospital. Police sources have not yet provided clarity on these aspects, leading to growing public speculation and suspicion that some facts may still be missing from the official version.

Social media reactions reflect a divided sentiment, while some appreciate the police’s prompt clarification, others question whether every aspect of the woman’s ordeal has been properly examined. Many demand that the administration ensure legal accountability for the false accusation, if confirmed, but also insist that any unexplained circumstances be transparently investigated to restore public trust.

A senior police official, when contacted, reiterated that the inquiry is ongoing and that every detail, including how the woman reached the hospital, will be verified.

The officer also emphasized that misuse of false allegations not only harms innocent people but also undermines genuine victims of crime.

Meanwhile, social activists have called for a fair and transparent probe to settle the confusion once and for all.

While Tripura Police’s investigation so far confirms that no gang rape occurred in the Amtali case and that the woman was intoxicated, questions about her hair being cut and her transport to the hospital remain unanswered. The public has urged authorities to clarify these inconsistencies to prevent further speculation.
