Bangladesh has initiated the construction of a high embankment along the border near Kailashahar, Unakoti district, adjacent to the Indo-Bangladesh border. Reports indicate that the embankment stretches across several border areas, including Kalibari, Nilganj, and Sonamura, raising concerns on the Indian side.Residents and officials in Kailashahar are apprehensive about the potential impact of this embankment, particularly during the monsoon. The structure could redirect rainwater towards Indian territory, increasing the risk of floods in low-lying areas of Tripura.Local authorities claim that such construction contradicts international border agreements, particularly as such embankments are prohibited within a 150-yard radius of the international boundary. Despite these restrictions, the embankment construction reportedly began under the leadership of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).

According to sources, this project has been ongoing since 2018 but gained momentum in recent months. The construction involves raising the embankment height significantly, allegedly without proper consultation with Indian authorities. Officials have urged the Ministry of External Affairs to address the issue diplomatically, emphasizing the importance of cross-border communication to prevent disputes. While some areas of the embankment have been completed, Indian Border Security Force (BSF) officials have voiced their concerns with the Bangladesh Border Guards (BGB). However, no formal resolution has yet been reached.Local communities living near the border are closely monitoring the situation, fearing potential damage to agricultural land and infrastructure. Diplomatic engagement between India and Bangladesh remains crucial to addressing the matter and ensuring adherence to international protocols.
