Government Railway Police (GRP) on Friday arrested a Bangladeshi national and an Indian tout from the Agartala railway station for allegedly crossing the international border illegally.

Police said the arrest was made around 8.30 am on the basis of a tip-off. The accused were identified as Deepu Ghosh (25), son of Dulal Ghosh, a resident of Sukanta Nagar under Gangarampur police station in Dakshin Dinajpur district of West Bengal, and Asha Das (18), daughter of Tirtha Das of Kaunia in Rangpur district of Bangladesh.

During interrogation, the duo reportedly admitted that the Bangladeshi woman had entered India through the Sepahijala district border with the help of the tout. Acting on the information, GRP personnel detained them near the main gate of Agartala railway station.

A case has been registered against the two under Sections 61(2)/249(b)/143(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, Sections 14(A)(b) and 14(C) of the Foreigners Act, 1946, and Section 3 of the Passport (Entry into India) Amendment Act, 2000.

Police said further investigation is underway to ascertain their network and identify others involved in the cross-border movement.
