A shocking incident has sparked widespread outrage in Kumarghat after Executive Engineer Ranjay Debbarma was brutally assaulted on Wednesday night inside his government quarter for allegedly questioning a pending contractor’s bill reportedly linked to a state minister’s brother.
According to reports, around 10 to 12 unidentified assailants stormed into the government quarter near the PWD Dak Bungalow area in Kumarghat, where Debbarma resides. The attackers allegedly beat him mercilessly with fists and kicks, leaving him bleeding and severely injured. His spectacles and mobile phone were broken during the assault.
The victim, Ranjay Debbarma, serves as the Executive Engineer of the Kailashahar Water Resource Division. In his statement, he said that the group confronted him late Wednesday night, demanding an explanation as to why the bill for a Rs. 48 lakh project carried out in Fatikroy’s Naishingpara and nearby areas had not been cleared.
The work order for the project was reportedly issued last March to a contractor named Himanshu Das, who is alleged to be the brother of State Minister Sudhanshu Das. When Debbarma explained that funds had not yet been released from Agartala and that he would consult with the Chief Engineer regarding the matter, the group allegedly became enraged and began assaulting him violently.
“I could not recognize the attackers in the dark, but everyone knows the contractor is the minister’s brother. I shouted for help, and they fled. Later, Kumarghat Police arrived and rescued me,” Debbarma told the media.
The incident has caused deep concern across Kumarghat, raising serious questions about the safety of government officers and the growing pressure on officials over pending financial matters.
As of now, no arrests have been made, and police have initiated an investigation. Citizens and government employees alike have demanded strict action and protection for public servants performing their duties.
