Tripura witnessed a day of intense political drama on Wednesday as a high-level All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) delegation led by party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh arrived in Agartala around 11.30 am, a day after the party’s state headquarters was allegedly attacked by BJP supporters during a protest rally.
The visit brought renewed focus on AITC’s efforts to expand its footprint in Tripura, where its previous attempts, including the 2021 civic polls, failed to make an impact. Following Tuesday’s incident, the party’s central leadership deputed Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, MPs Sayoni Ghosh and Pratima Mondal, and youth leader Sudip Raha along with Ghosh to assess the situation and meet the DGP.
Tension prevailed at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport as the delegation alleged denial of local transport. They staged a brief sit-in, accusing authorities of obstructing their movement. The police later arranged vehicles after hours of delay.
At a press conference, Ghosh condemned violence in Bengal but accused BJP of politicising the issue. He said the Tripura government’s actions reflected insecurity over AITC’s growing influence. Sayoni Ghosh said the attack itself proved the party’s relevance in the state.
The delegation met the DGP, submitting a memorandum seeking arrests of those responsible for the attack and safety assurances for AITC workers.
