In a bizarre incident of same side threat of extortion in the name of ‘Durga Puja’, a BJP local ‘Karyakarta’ was forced to flee his home in Surendra Nagar area under Kakrabon police station under Udaipur subdivision and file a complaint with the West Agartala police station against the ‘Mandal’ president and the latter’s younger brother. Police sources said that Shubhasish Datta, resident of Surendra Nagar area of Kakrabon and contractual civil engineer engaged in the JICA project, have long been residents of the area along with his widowed mother Kalpana Debnath Datta who is a working teacher in a government school. Shubhasish Datta is a leading BJP worker of the area and state vice president of pro-BJP ‘Vibekananda Vichar Manch’.

On the eve of the ‘Durga Puja’ the local ‘Mandal’ president Biswajit Sarkar and his younger brother Liton Sarkar had demanded an exorbitant amount as ‘Puja’ subscription which Shubhasish Datta and his mother could not pay. On the day of ‘Ashtami’ during ‘Durga Puja’ Shubhasish’s mother Kalpana Debnath Datta had gone to offer ‘Bhog’ in the pandal but was grossly insulted by the ‘Mandal’ president Biswajit Sarkar and his younger brother Liton Sarkar . Having come to know of this Shubhasish reached the pandal and asked the ‘Mandal’ president and his younger brother why his mother had been insulted so but the duo of Biswajit Sarkar and Liton Sarkar beat up Shubhasish and inflicted serious injuries on him.

Fearing for his life Shubhasish reached Bishalgarh and underwent treatment for injuries sustained and then reached Agartala . He then filed a complaint with the West Agartala police station against Biswajit Sarkar and Liton Sarkar . But even though the ‘Zero FIR’ has been forwarded by the West Agartala police station to Kakrabon police station no action has as yet been taken by the Kakrabon police station in the matter.
