Tension flared in Agartala today as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters staged a protest against the alleged attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh in West Bengal. Both leaders were reportedly injured yesterday while distributing relief materials when miscreants assaulted them, leaving them bloodied.
In Tripura, the protest was organized by the BJP Sadar (Urban) Committee. The rally began from Ramthakur Sangha and proceeded towards the Tripura Pradesh Trinamool Congress (TMC) office near Motor Stand. According to eyewitnesses, a few agitated youths attempted to attack the TMC office, but BJP Yuva Morcha president and MLA Sushanta Deb along with Sadar (Urban) president Asim Bhattacharjee swiftly intervened to stop the violence.
Sources said that their prompt action, the situation was brought under control, and apart from some flowerpots and flex boards being damaged, no major destruction took place.
Tripura’s BJP MP Biplab Kumar Deb inquired about the health condition of the injured leaders and strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “shameful act of political violence.” He asserted, “Those who have resorted to such violence will not be spared by the people’s verdict.”
However, the protest in Agartala did lead to some chaotic moments as angry BJP workers demonstrated in front of the TMC office, tearing down party flags and festoons in protest against the West Bengal incident.
The episode also drew political reactions from opposition leaders in Tripura, who accused the BJP of “double standards.” They recalled previous more the thousands cases of political violence in Tripura since 2018, mentioning leaders such as Badal Shil, Sushital Debnath, and Tapas Sutradhar who were killed in politically motivated incidents during the BJP’s tenure.
Political observers remarked that the developments in Agartala reflected the growing political friction between the BJP and the TMC beyond state borders. While BJP leaders accused the Trinamool Congress of orchestrating violence in West Bengal, TMC leaders condemned the vandalism in Agartala, terming it “a display of lawlessness and intolerance.”
Police later brought the situation under control, and no major injuries were reported. Authorities are maintaining strict vigilance to prevent any further escalation.
