In a significant political development, Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, along with two senior party leaders Ranjit Debbarma and Jagadish Debbarma, has filed a case in the Supreme Court of India challenging the prolonged delay in holding the Village Council (VC) elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
After filing the case in New Delhi, Pradyot Kishore Debbarma informed that the Hon’ble Chief Justice of India (CJI) had listened to their submission today and assured that the hearing for the VC election matter will take place on the 27th or 28th of this month.
Posting a Facebook reactions on this issue, Pradyot said,
> “The Hon’ble CJI has listened to our mention today at the Supreme Court, and the hearing for the VC elections will take place later this month. The delay in holding the VC election must be one of the longest delays in the history of democratic India.”
The Tipra Motha leadership has consistently accused the state government of deliberately delaying the village-level polls, which they claim undermines the democratic rights of the indigenous Tiprasa people living in the ADC areas.
The Village Committee elections—a cornerstone of grassroots governance in the Sixth Schedule areas—have not been held for several years, creating widespread discontent across the tribal areas of Tripura.
Party insiders suggest that Tipra Motha’s move to approach the Supreme Court is aimed at ensuring constitutional justice and restoring local self-governance in the ADC areas, which remain without elected Village Committees for an unprecedented duration.
