Tripura Police on Saturday arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old girl in Agartala, officials said.

The accused, identified as Sankar Das, a fish vendor, was absconding after the incident came to light on Friday morning, said Officer-in-Charge of West Agartala Women’s Police Station, Shiuli Das.

“Soon after receiving the complaint, search operations were launched in his locality. He was later arrested from a relative’s house at Sekerkote with assistance from Amtali Police Station,” the officer said.

The case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The girl, who was found unconscious in an abandoned under-construction building in the western part of the city, was first taken to IGM Hospital and later shifted to GB Pant Hospital for advanced treatment. Police said her condition is now stable but she remains under medical observation.

Investigators suspect the girl was either lured or coerced into the building, where the accused allegedly assaulted her before fleeing.

Locals rescued the girl the next morning and informed the police.

Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and local MLA visited the survivor at the hospital and assured her family of strict action. “The accused has been identified and the law will take its course,” the Mayor said.

Family members alleged that the accused had attempted to reach a compromise to avoid legal action.
