In a dramatic, filmy-style jailbreak, six undertrial prisoners escaped from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in North Tripura during the early hours of yesterday, triggering a massive security crisis in the state’s prison administration.

Taking stern action, the Inspector General of Prisons, Government of Tripura, has suspended five jail officials including the Jailor and four Warders for negligence in duty. A departmental inquiry under Rule 10 of the Central Civil Services (Classification, Control & Appeal) Rules, 1965 has also been ordered against them.

Those suspended are:

Sri Notan Lodh, Warder, Md. Gedu Mia, Warder, Sri Prashikhan Jamatia, Warder, Sri Pallab Kanti Bhowmik, Warder and Sri Dhananjoy Bhattacharya, Jailor.

According to prison sources, of the six prisoners who escaped, one was recaptured yesterday itself, while another was nabbed today morning. However, four fugitives remain absconding even after 36 hours of continuous search operations.

Police and prison authorities have launched an intensive manhunt across different parts of Tripura and adjoining areas to trace the remaining four escapees. Security has also been tightened in all jails of the state following the incident.

The sensational jailbreak has drawn sharp public attention, exposing serious lapses in security at Dharmanagar Sub-Jail. The state government has assured that strict action will be taken against those responsible once the inquiry report is submitted.
