The ‘Chalaman Sangha’ club in the heart of Agartala town in Madhyapara area has always been known to be a relatively posh area , famous for it patronage of body building , weight lifting etc. It is also the area that was once inhabited by celebrated royal scholar of Tripura, late Ganga Prasad Sharma. His six sons were all body builders who took part in national competitions on behalf of Tripura and won accolades . But after death of death in Covid affect of Ganga Prasad’s youngest son Uma Prasad Bhattacharjee in 2020 the club’s sports activism has been replaced by cultural activism and social welfare programmes. The club has been organizing attractive ‘Durga Pujas’ annually since the early fifties with huge number of people thronging its gaudy pandal.

This year ‘Chalaman Sangha’s ‘Durga Puja’ is being organised in a traditionally attractive fashion with artists and artisans from West Bengal contributing to many aspects of the worship of the Mother Goddess. The pandal this year raised on the western bank of the pond before the club building this year celebrates the rich handloom and handicraft culture of Bankura, West Bengal. The pandal has been tastefully built by Chandrangshu Das from Kanthi area in east Medinipur district of West Bengal while the clay image of the Mother Goddess and her retinue have been carefully constructed by Gurupada Panda, also of Kanthi, east Medinipur, West Bengal. The lighting and decoration work have been done by Laxmi Narayan Electrical of Agartala .

The secretary of the club Rakesh Karmakar and president Gitanjali Paul have made every effort to make the ‘Puja’ successful this year. They expressed the hope that the ‘Puja’ enthusiasts will be happy to see the pandal and overall arrangement for the ‘Puja’. Both Rakesh and Gitanjali have been personally working hard round the clock to ensure success of the ‘Durga Puja’ this year as well as to see no visitor faces any problem.
