Amidst the din and bustle of festivities surrounding the four-day ‘Durga Puja’ across the state, the only ‘Puja’ that maintains ritual purity enjoined by the Hindu scripture ‘Matsya Purana’ is being quietly held in the famous Thakurbari in the Pyari Mater garden area of Jaynagar, west of Agartala town. The Thakurbari Durga Puja is celebrating the platinum jubilee this year as this is the 75th year of the ritual worship that had commenced in 1950 in the household of late Sanskrit scholar Sudhir Chandra Bhattacharjee.
In a written statement Ms Lipika Bhattacharjee who has kept alive the glorious legacy of the ritually pure ‘Durga Puja’ of Thakurbari said that originally the ‘Puja’ used to be annually held in the original residence of Thakurs or Brahmin scholars in Barshikura village under Mymensingh district of present Bangladesh. It was due to the partition of the country that the descendants of the Thakurs had shifted to their present residence in Jaynagar Pyari Master garden area and the annual ‘Durga Puja’ had commenced from the year 1950. This has been continuing without interruption since then and ,what is more important, is that there is a temple of Lord Shiva, consort of ‘Debi Durga’ in the Thakurbari. The image of Lord Shiva had also come from the Kishore ganj district that earlier formed part of the Mymensingh district.
It was late Sanskrit scholar Sudhir Chandra Bhattacharjee , much decorated and honoured by the government of India, who had received a divine ordination in dream to begin the ‘Durga Puja’ as well as to bring the image of Lord Shiva from Kishoreganj. “The work on making the images of Debi Durga is undertaken ritually every year from the day of ‘Janmashtami’ and the finishing touch is given ahead of the ‘Sashthi Tithi’. Besides performing all the scripturally ordained rituals and chanting of hymns including daily recitation of ‘Debi Chandi Stotram’ the entire ‘Puja’ is done in a pure manner in compliance with all the prescribed rituals . “After my husband Sajal Bhattacharjee prematurely passed away I have been performing the responsibility of the ‘Durga Puja’ as prescribed by scriputures annually; no part of the prescribed puja is neglected including distribution of consecrated Prasadam ; the immersion is also done on the date and ‘Tithi’ prescribed by the almanac” said Lipika Bhattacharjee, the living spirit of the ‘Durga Puja’ in Thakurbari. She added that this year is the platinum jubilee of the ‘Puja’ as per the span calculated from the opening year of 1950 this year but actually the ‘Durga Puja’ of Thakurbari had commenced several centuries ago.
