The Tripura High Court has cancelled the bail of six individuals accused in the 2024 murder of CPI(M) leader Badal Shil. Justice Biswajit Palit issued the order following a petition filed by Shil’s daughter, Pallavi Shil. The court directed the accused to surrender by October 7 and remain in judicial custody thereafter.
Badal Shil, 49, was a candidate for the South Tripura Zilla Parishad in the 2024 panchayat elections. On July 12, 2024, he was attacked by alleged BJP supporters in Rajnagar, South Tripura. He succumbed to his injuries at GB Hospital in Agartala, leading to widespread protests and a 12-hour statewide bandh called by the CPI(M) .
The CPI(M) accused the ruling BJP of orchestrating a campaign of violence against opposition candidates during the election period, citing Shil’s murder as part of a broader pattern of intimidation . The case had been under judicial scrutiny, and the High Court’s recent decision has been welcomed by Shil’s family and supporters as a step toward justice.
In July 2025, Shil’s widow, Priyanki Dey, had approached the High Court seeking protection for the family after the accused were granted bail and allegedly began threatening them . The court’s latest ruling is expected to expedite the legal proceedings and ensure the accused face trial in custody.
