The Hon’ble High Court of Tripura has stepped in on the controversy surrounding recent recruitments at Tripura University (TU). Justice Shri Sabyasachi Purkayastha, after preliminary hearings, has issued notices to Tripura University, the job recipients, and the University Grants Commission (UGC) in two separate writ petitions
WPC No. 568/2025 and WPC No. 556/2025.
The first case concerns the recruitment of an Assistant Professor in the Department of Tourism Administration. The petitioner has alleged that the selected candidate was appointed in violation of the advertisement criteria, which clearly mandated that applicants must have a Master’s Degree in Tourism. It is claimed that the appointed individual did not meet this essential qualification, thereby rendering the appointment illegal.
The second case pertains to the recruitment of a Section Officer. Here, the litigant has challenged the appointment on the grounds that the selected candidate did not possess the minimum educational qualifications required under the Tripura University Cadre Recruitment Rules, 2023.
Both cases have raised serious concerns about adherence to recruitment modalities at the central university. The next hearings are scheduled for November 2025. Advocate Mr. Samarjit Bhattacharjee is representing the petitioners in both matters.
Significantly, allegations of irregularities are not limited to these two recruitments alone. Reports suggest that another appointment within the Tourism Administration Department of TU has also come under a cloud, hinting at wider irregularities in the university’s recent hiring practices.
