The quality of construction work of the railway has often sparked controversies in various parts of the country and the Northeast Frontier (NF) railway division is no exception to this. But this has recently come into sharp focus in the work on construction of new Nishchintipur railway station for connectivity with Bangladesh across the border. A part of the newly built Nishchintipur railway station has partially slid into the ground and the work on demolition of this part started yesterday.

The general manager (construction) of the NF railway, accompanied by chief engineer Rajesh Bardoloi and other senior officials of NF railway yesterday visited the newly built Nishchintipur railway station before returning to Guwahati at night. Sources from NF railway said that originally an amount of Rs 251 crores had been sanctioned for construction of the Nishchintipur railway station and the remaining part of the fifteen KM railway track upto Akhaura in Bangladesh but finally the amount expended reached a whopping Rs 700 crores. But what caused a massive surprise was the defective construction of the Nishchintipur railway station , a par which developed cracks shortly after the formal conclusion of the construction work. Besides , part of the building started sinking underground soon even though the station had been inaugurated with much fanfare by none other than prime minister Narendra Modi himself. There was lot of legitimate criticism over the quality of work executed by the construction agency, IRCON.

Finally the NF railway authority decided to dismantle part of the railway station and this is why a group of top officials connected with the construction wing visited the station yesterday. Sources from NF railway said that the dismantling work will entail an expense of Rs 40 crores and this amount will have to be borne by the construction agency IRCON as the NF railway will not spend anything on the dismantling work. However , the high-level officials and technocrats connected with construction work of the NF railway did not make any comment on the issue before leaving the state after the whirlwind tour.
