Tripura now has six national highways as against only two before the year 2014. This was stated in the state assembly today by the chief minister Dr Manik Saha in reply to a ‘starred’ question-meant for direct reply within the house-from the young CPI (M) MLA Ramu Das. The chief minister furnished the reply in his capacity as minister for PWD.

Detailing his answer Dr Saha said that the six highways now are NH-08, NH-208, NH-208A, NH-108-A, NH-108-B and NH-44A. Before the year 2014 Tripura had only two national highways, NH-08 (198 KM between Churaibari and Agartala) and NH-44A (134 KM between Manu and Singlum). Te total length of the two highways then was 332 KM.

But after the NDA government had come to power in 2014 four more highways were declared for the state . They are : NH-208 (Kumarghat-Kailasahar-Kamalpur-Khowai-Sabroom, 265 KMs), NH-208A (Kailasahar-Kurti, 45 KMs), NH-108-B (Khowai-Agartala, 55 KMs), NH-108A (Jolaibari-Belonia, 22.90 KM). Later on NH-08 was extended from Agartala to Sabroom covering western by-pass adding a distance of 25.40 KMs and at the same time it was extended from Udaipur to Srimantapur in Sonamura subdivision covering a distance of 34.50 KMs , taking the total distance of highways in the state up to 923.31 KMs now.

Regarding widening of the highways the chief minister said that the work on widening is now on and it is being executed by the NHIDCL. The work will be completed soon, the chief minister added.
