Former Chief Minister of Tripura and sitting MP, Biplab Kumar Deb, has alleged that anti-social elements, under political shelter, carried out a sudden attack on a BJP programme at Hezamara in West Tripura. In a Facebook post, Deb said the attack was orchestrated with the intention of creating unrest and sowing divisions among tribal communities.

According to his statement, several BJP workers, including BJP ST Morcha Vice-President Mangal Debbarma and women office-bearers, sustained serious injuries in the incident. A journalist covering the programme was also reportedly injured.

Deb added that he held a detailed discussion on the matter with Tipra Motha founder Maharaja Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma. He asserted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his party remained committed to the overall development of Tripura and that such “communist-style external instigations” would not be tolerated. “Attempts to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of the state will be dealt with firmly,” he stated.

Interestingly, both Deb and Pradyot, in their respective social media platforms, alleged that the CPIM was behind the growing trend of such attacks in Tripura.

Reacting sharply, CPIM state secretary Jitendra Chaudhury condemned what he termed as “irresponsible comments” by both Biplab Deb and Pradyot Kishore Debbarma. He dismissed their allegations, claiming instead that the Hezamara attack reflected the “internal power politics” between BJP and Tipra Motha.

The incident has sparked fresh political controversy, with parties trading blame as tensions simmer in the tribal belt of the state.
