Tensions within the ruling alliance in Tripura have resurfaced, as TIPRA Motha once again hinted at severing ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). On Sunday, TIPRA Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma told reporters that the party is deeply dissatisfied after none of its MLAs, MDCs, or even royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, the face of the Greater Tipraland demand were invited to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s event at the historic Tripureshwari Temple.
Ranjit Debbarma, considered a close aide of Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, expressed strong resentment, calling it an “insult” to the alliance partner. “It is shameful that elected representatives from TIPRA Motha, an alliance partner of the BJP, were not invited. Even members of the royal family were ignored despite the Prime Minister’s presence at such an important cultural and religious programme,” Debbarma said.
He further termed the incident “discourteous and unacceptable,” warning that if such neglect continues, TIPRA Motha will be forced to reconsider its ties with the BJP. “We are unhappy with the way we are being treated. A final decision on continuing the alliance will be taken very soon,” Debbarma cautioned.
This is not the first time Ranjit Debbarma has raised the threat of walking out of the alliance. However, party insiders suggest that the fresh controversy over the Tripureshwari Temple event has added to growing dissatisfaction within TIPRA Motha.
Meanwhile, TIPRA Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, who is currently in Singapore attending the North East Festival, has not yet reacted publicly to the issue.
The controversy comes at a time when relations between the BJP and TIPRA Motha, crucial for stability in the state’s tribal areas, remain fragile, with the demand for a separate ‘Greater Tipraland’ still unresolved.
