The issue of tourism development in Tripura triggered a sharp exchange in the State Assembly day before yesterday during the discussion on a Private Members' Resolution moved by MLA Deepak Majumdar.

Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury asserted that there is no dearth of funds for the development of the sector. However, CPI(M) MLA Dipankar Sen launched a scathing attack on the government, alleging that despite more than seven and a half years in power, the BJP-led government has failed to build a single new tourist destination in the state.

Sen pointed out that nearly all major tourist attractions of Tripura

including Chabimura, Trishna, Chottakhola Liberation War Memorial Park, Tepania Eco Park, Narikel Kunja, Pilak, Butterfly Park, Chandrapur Mosque, Belonia Elephant Park, Dhananjay Memorial Park, Sepahijala Sanctuary, Agartala Heritage Park, Khumulwng Park, Kamalasagar, Matarbari’s initial development, Ujjayanta Palace premises, Science City, and Neermahal’s restoration

were created during the Left Front regime.

“Seven years have passed, yet no new project has been delivered. The government had promised a ropeway at Udaipur’s Matarbari and a modern railway station at Udaipur, but those assurances remain unfulfilled,” Sen said.

He admitted that modernization of the older tourist centres has been taken up by the department, but questioned the discrepancy between the massive inflow of funds and the actual ground-level achievements.

“Our party has always wanted genuine development of tourism, and we still want that. But for real progress, plans must be made by experts who can make Tripura more attractive for visitors,” Sen urged, while extending support to Majumdar’s resolution.

The heated debate underscored the Opposition’s demand for greater transparency and vision in utilizing the tourism budget, even as the government maintained that funds are not a constraint for future expansion.
