The civil judge (senior division-1) of Agartala yesterday dismissed ab initio a civil defamation case filed by BJP MP (East Tripura) Kriti Debi Singh and her husband Yogeshwar Singh against CPI (M) candidate Rajendra Reang. In the case Kriti Debi and Yogeshwar Singh had demanded a compensation of Rs 10 crores from Rajendra Reang on ground of defamation.

Sources in the court said that in the run-up to the Loksaba election last year Rajendra Reang’s election agent Nitish Debnath had filed a complaint with the returning officer that Kriti Debi Singh in her election affidavit had suppressed the fact that her name figured as an accused in a murder case in her matrimonial home in Chhattishgarh, as mentioned in the official website of the Chhattishgarh government. There had been a correspondence over the issue between Nitish Debnath and election commission authority.

But Kriti Debi Singh and her husband Yogeshwar Singh had filed a civil defamation case against Rajendra Reang over the issue, demanding a compensation of Rs 10 crores for defamation. The case came up yesterday in the court of the civil judge (senior division 1) and after perusing the case record and upon hearing the pleas of the advocate representing Rajendra Reang the judge dismissed the case as having no substance and maintainability. Kriti Debi Singh and her husband were however not present in the court at the time of hearing.
