In a major administrative development, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sanjoy Sarkar, In-Charge of Kakraban Police Station, has been suspended by the Superintendent of Police, Gomati District, for gross negligence in duty in connection with the brutal murder of housewife Anjali Sarkar at Mirza under Kakraban PS. The suspension order came into effect from the forenoon of September 20, 2025.
According to the suspension order, on the night of September 18, 2025, around 10:30 pm, Anjali Sarkar and her husband Pankaj Sarkar were attacked at their shop in Mirza Market due to previous enmity. The assailants, led by Mana Majumdar along with two accomplices, allegedly threatened the couple with dire consequences and physically assaulted them. Later, Anjali Sarkar was set on fire and killed in a barbaric manner, while her husband sustained serious injuries.
Despite the severity of the case, ASI Sanjoy Sarkar reportedly failed to verify the matter properly and did not take any action against the accused persons. This dereliction of duty has been described by the district police administration as unacceptable and unbecoming of a disciplined police officer.
Significantly, the prime accused in the case, Mana Majumdar, who is the nephew of local MLA Jatindra Majumdar, has not been arrested yet. The delay in action has sparked concerns and resentment among locals, raising questions over the impartiality of the investigation.
Following his suspension, ASI Sanjoy Sarkar has been attached to Dhwajanagar Police Lines under the control of R.I. (Gomati) and will receive subsistence allowance as per service rules during the suspension period. A departmental proceeding is also underway against him.
Meanwhile, pressure is mounting on the police to arrest the main culprits immediately and ensure justice for the slain housewife.
