In a significant political development, a section of Tipra Motha leadership, under the banner of a civil society group, has called for a 12-hour statewide Tripura strike on October 13, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. The announcement was made today at 12:30 PM during a press conference at the MLA Hostel Conference Hall in Agartala.
The press meet was addressed by Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma, alongside several other tribal leaders and civil society representatives. The leaders clarified that the strike is being organised under the name of a non-political and non-religious social organisation, in view of restrictions imposed on Tipra Motha under the tripartite peace agreement with the Centre, which prevents the party from staging direct agitations.
The leaders expressed strong dissatisfaction with what they described as the state government’s negligence towards key issues affecting indigenous people of Tripura.During the press conference, civil society leaders alleged that despite directives from the Union Home Ministry, the Tripura government has failed to initiate measures to detect and deport illegal migrants. Unlike Assam, Tripura has not established detention camps, resulting in continued infiltration from Bangladesh and other states.
Demanding the Inner Line Permit (ILP), the Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma demanded to implement the ILP system in Tripura to regulate the entry of outsiders and prevent demographic imbalance. Leaders claimed that despite repeated appeals, the state has ignored this demand.
Regarding the Tri-Partite Tiprasa Accord, the Tipra Motha MLA Ranjit Debbarma said that
although the Accord was signed in New Delhi 18 months ago, its implementation has yet to begin. Leaders warned that the prolonged delay is deepening frustration among indigenous communities who continue to suffer from inadequate access to food, shelter, education, and healthcare.
Demanding Roman Script for Kokborok, Shri Debbarma criticised the state government for its failure to declare Roman script as the official script for the Kokborok language. Leaders said the indecision is creating serious academic challenges for tribal students.Regarding fake SC/ST certificates, allegations were made that large numbers of fake caste certificates are being issued, depriving genuine SC and ST citizens of their rightful benefits. Leaders accused the state of remaining silent on this matter. The leaders assured that the strike will be conducted peacefully. Essential services including ambulances, fire services, air traffic control, water supply, postal services, milk supply, media vehicles, and petroleum carriers will remain exempt. Shops selling medicines, fruits, milk, sweets, and hotels will also remain open.
Speaking on behalf of the civil society, Ranjit Debbarma reiterated that the bandh is neither politically nor religiously motivated, but is a call to safeguard the rights of indigenous Tiprasa people and push for immediate government action on unresolved issues.
