The controversy over cancelled recruitments in Tripura has resurfaced after a significant Supreme Court verdict on August 28, 2024. Following the BJP’s rise to power in 2018, the state government scrapped more than 15,000 posts under the pretext of a new recruitment policy, drawing widespread criticism from unemployed youths across the state.
In its recent ruling, the Hon’ble Supreme Court delivered three important directives concerning recruitments originally initiated during 2016–17. The apex court ordered the appointment of 45 candidates for TCS and TPS posts and one Boiler Inspector post within four months. Additionally, the court instructed that 509 TSR vacancies must be filled on the basis of the merit list within two months.
Despite thousands of posts being finalized for recruitment across various departments during the previous administration, they were abruptly cancelled after 2018. These included nearly 13,000 posts in the Education and Social Education departments, 500 in the Transport department, 175 Physical Instructors, 786 positions in Tripura Police, 55 in the Agriculture department, and 103 in the Industry and Commerce department. Opposition parties and youth organizations have repeatedly described the mass cancellation as an anti-youth and anti-unemployment measure by the BJP government.
In the wake of the Supreme Court’s directives, pressure is mounting on the state government to implement the order without delay. To amplify the demand, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) and the Tribal Youth Federation (TYF) submitted a joint deputation today to the Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, inside the State Assembly.
The youth bodies urged the Opposition to intensify pressure both inside and outside the Assembly so that the recruitment processes are completed swiftly in the interest of thousands of unemployed youths in Tripura.
