Amidst a deafening and conspiratorial silence among majority Muslims, political parties, media and civil society the persecution of Hindu minorities has been continuing unabated in different parts of Bangladesh. Any protest or action against this is conspicuous by absence.

In the latest gruesome killing, a hallmark of new Yunus ruled Bangladesh, a Hindu rice trader Kritish Das (45) was found lying dead in a ditch at a little distance from his ancestral home in Kthalia village under Baniachong sub-district in Habiganj district yesterday. Kritish Das’s corpse bearing multiple cut injuries confirmed that he had been hacked to death. Shortly after he had left home yesterday in the morning his mobile had been found to be switched off by family members who thought that he might have been busy in his shop in Baniachong main market. Since Kritish did not return home last night his anxious family members launched search operation and finally found his dead body in a ditch at a little distance from his home. The police personnel in Baniachong police station is yet to register a case. The grisly killing of Kritish Das has sparked fresh fear and anxiety over security among the Hindu minorities.

Meanwhile, despite chief advisor Md Yunus’s visit to the Dhakeshwari temple on Tuesday last and assurance given to minority leaders over security of ‘Durga Puja’, desecration of pandals and demolition of images of ‘Debi Durga’ and her retinue continue in different parts of Bangladesh. On Wednesday night a pandal was vandalised in Gazipur ,north of Dhaka, and earthen images of deities were broken by Muslim communal elements and miscreants. Even though a ritual complain has been filed with the Gazipur police station, it is more or less certain that no action will be taken and no investigation launched by police, sources added.
