The PCC president and former MLA Asish Kumar Saha has held a section of officers and employees of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) responsible for the cheque forgery scam and looting of Rs 16 crores by online fraudsters from outside the state. “We have taken note of the fact that one lady officer of the UCO bank has been arrested in connection with the cheque forgery but she merely complied with what she had been asked to do by superiors ; beside, without involvement of the AMC staff such cheque forgery could not take place ; why are not they being arrested” said Asish.

Speaking to media persons he said that according to information that came to him the cheques had been transmitted for encashment to 78 different accounts across the country and then they were finally deposited with two accounts , one in Delhi’s Chandni Chok area and another in Nagpur. He said that the investigation has actually lost steam after the formation of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) and the guilty people in AMC are being given a free passage even though without their involvement the scam would not have come about. Describing the contention of AMC Mayor Dipak Majumder regarding the scam as ‘untrue’ Asish said that in case the cheques had been cloned , the cloning could not have happened without checking with the original cheques and their numbers . “Now the question is who made available to the fraudsters the images of the cheques and their numbers ; the person who is in charge of custody of the cheques in AMC should be immediately arrested and interrogated ; besides it should also be chequed whether the UCO bank authority had transmitted mobile alert for such big cheque encashment and to whom; the whole embezzlement and frauds were a joint venture and should be thoroughly investigated” said Asish.

He sought immediate intervention of the chief minister Dr Manik Saha in the matter for unearthing the truth. “In case the government is serious about finding the truth of the matter and about recovering the entire lost amount , the chief minister should personally intervene in the matter and monitor the investigation in a time-bound manner” said Asish Kumar Saha.
