Amidst increasingly strident criticism over a host of issues from the opposition, the minister for social welfare Tinku Roy expressed disappointment that the real good works of the government and actual achievements are not being highlighted in the public domain. In an informal chat with media persons in the office of Tripurainfo.com in Lichubagan area of Agartala, the minister for social welfare said that unlike the previous left front government and the constituent parties the BJP government believes delivering on promises and giving benefits to the people.
To drive home his point Tinku Roy said that there are more than 6500 workers in 56 functional tea gardens of the state . “We have given land ownership ‘Patta’ to 4500 tea garden worker families for permanent stay in the tea gardens without fear of dislocation; daily wages of the workers have also been increased from Rs 176.00 for adult males and females to Rs 204 while daily wages of non-adult (male and female) workers have been raised from Rs 88.00 per day to Rs 102.00 now ; this is a fair hike” said minister Tinku Roy.
Regarding social security allowances for physically challenged or ‘Divyang’ people he said that at present they are getting allowances at the rate of Rs 2 thousand per month which is much higher than the paltry allowance given during the left front time. However, the highest hike has been given to those who are mentally retarded as they are now getting Rs 4 thousand per month as against much lower amounts earlier. He asserted that the government will give further hikes in future keeping the market realities in mind.
However, Tinku Roy expressed dismay over the lack of awareness among people over the welfare schemes of the government and how to have access to the benefits. “Many needy and eligible people are not even aware of the benefits and the ways and means of availing themselves of them; I think it is the duty of conscious people to make them aware and help them access the benefits ; actually a government or a party can not do everything ; the people have to come forward and have to be proactive in gaining awareness and helping others access the benefits” said Tinku Roy.
