Members of the 'Tripura Yuktibad Bikash Manch', along with central representatives, local activists from Udaipur, and the family members and neighbors of late Mayarani Sutradhar, who died from a snake bite on September 8 submitted a deputation to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Gomati district today, raising three key demands.

The organization highlighted the family’s allegations that despite spending a long time at the district hospital, the patient did not receive proper treatment for snake bite. Doctors reportedly informed them that there was no anti-snake venom available at the hospital. The family tried to shift the patient to GBP Hospital, Agartala, but no ambulance was provided. Ultimately, they had to arrange a private vehicle, but due to the delay, the patient died upon reaching GBP Hospital.

Following the incident, members of the 'Tripura Yuktibad Bikash Manch' visited the locality, gathered facts, and organized an awareness program on snakes. Volunteer Diptanu Debnath rescued a venomous krait from the victim’s house on the same night and another from a neighboring house the next day. Experts confirmed the snake to be neurotoxic, making timely administration of anti-snake venom crucial to survival.

For over three decades, the organization has been campaigning for scientific treatment of snake bites in Tripura, a hilly state where snake-human conflict has been on the rise due to urban expansion into forested areas. In today’s deputation, the following demands were placed before district health authorities:

Immediate stocking of adequate anti-snake venom from district hospitals down to primary health centers.

Training of doctors in snake bite management as per IMA recommendations.

Financial compensation to the bereaved family of the deceased.

Since the CMO was not present at the office, the deputation was submitted to another senior official, who assured that the matter would be forwarded to the CMO.

The organization stressed that without proper scientific treatment facilities, snake-bite-related deaths will continue to rise and superstitions will persist. They appealed to the general public to support their demands to prevent further loss of lives.
