He had courted a brief police booking and appearance in court for instant bail by payment only to save his job from the wrath of the then AMC chairman way back in 1985, he had also fought umpteen number of cases for people loyal to him and he had managed to give jobs to at least five poor persons by navigating the obstructions in his way created by his inveterate enemies , the ruling CPI (M). Samir Ghosh (71), a legend of sorts in the AMC and a man liked and disliked with equally deep emotion, breathed his last this morning in his home at ‘Durga Chaumuhuni’ from protracted illness. He is survived by his lone married daughter , son in law and two grand children in advanced level of academic studies.
Bereaved of his wife in May 2021, Samir Ghosh had been living virtually alone , still fighting court cases and winning most of them. It was a section of his former colleagues in the AMC and his few journalist friends who kept in touch with him till his death. Many of his close friends and acquaintances who attended the funeral and cremation in Battala crematorium nostalgically recalled how Samir Ghosh had fought corruption in AMC with the help of his journalist friends, contacts in the media and even by going for litigation at his own expense.
“Samirda was a man who always ignited conflicting emotions ; there were many who liked him but there were many more who used to feel scared of him ; he always helped people who used to approach him in a friendly manner even at his own expense but his fight against corruption also antagonized many but overall he was liked more ; so long as he was in service in AMC there was a fear of exposure among the corrupt and bribe takers but his retirement in December 2015 had opened the flood gates ; he was really a very colourful man fond of good food and of hosting parties; we will miss him sorely” said Amar Acharjee ,a retired employee of AMC.
