Altogether 220 listed community ‘Durga Pujas’ will be organised this year at Agartala though the number will go up if the ‘Pujas’ organised in the outlying areas of the town are taken into account. The state administration has already held a number of meetings with organizers and representatives of clubs to issue necessary instructions and urge upon the ‘Puja’ organizers to maintain discipline and act according to rules and regulations governing such community celebrations.

Yesterday the second meeting with the ‘Puja’ organizers including representatives of clubs was held in Agartala Town Hall by the DM (west) Dr Vishal Kumar and SP (west) Namit Pathak. The decorators and sound system providers of the community ‘Durga Pujas’ were also present in the meeting. All went well in the meeting as the DM and SP asked the organizers to respect the law and existing rules and regulations in organizing their ‘Pujas’ and the organizers and club representatives also assured the administration of complying with all rules and regulations .

Speaking to media persons the DM (west) Dr Vishal Kumar said that the meeting had been convened to sensitise the organizers about their duties and need for complying with rules and regulations. “We have specially asked them not to do anything that will violate rules and cause inconvenience to people; one serious problem is that of noise pollution and the organizers have been asked to keep their microphones and sound system within the levels permitted by law ; the highest level is 65 decibel” said Dr Vishal Kumar. He however conceded that this year the narrowing down of the roads because of ongoing construction work on widening of drains will cause a problem and the ‘Puja’ organizers have been instructed to build pandals and organise ‘Pujas’ and festivities in such a manner that will not create any problem or inconvenience people.

Meanwhile, extortion of money from drivers of trucks and buses in the name of collection of subscription has been going on despite complaints already filed. This extortion is most acute in north and south Tripura. Official sources here said that the SPs of districts have been directed to take appropriate action to stop this and nab the culprits involved in extortion.
