Tipra Motha legislator and senior leader Ranjit Debbarma has raised a strong demand for an immediate and effective inquiry into the alleged large scale settlement of Bangladeshi illegal migrants in Dhalai district of Tripura.

In a detailed complaint addressed to state authorities, Debbarma highlighted that a considerable number of illegal migrants from Bangladesh have permanently settled in different parts of Dhalai, particularly under the TTAADC areas and reserve forest land. He alleged that many have acquired key Indian documents including EPIC voter cards, Aadhaar, PAN, Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates and Permanent Resident of Tripura Certificates (PRTC) by submitting fake and fabricated supporting documents.

According to his letter, the intruders are not only residing in the district but are also engaged in government services, running businesses, gardening, and setting up rubber plantations and fruit gardens. He pointed out that several villages under Chamanu, Gandatwisa, and Dumburnagar blocks have been affected by such alleged infiltration, where illegal migrants have built houses and colonies even on government khas land.

The MLA warned that some foreign nationals have managed to fraudulently enlist themselves in electoral rolls with the support of corrupt officials, brokers, and politicians, thereby participating in past elections. He further raised concerns over cases of dual citizenship, where individuals allegedly cast votes in both India and Bangladesh.

Debbarma cautioned that such practices have directly deprived genuine tribal people of their rightful benefits and posed a threat to national security. He also flagged instances where Chakma and Hajong settlers from Arunachal Pradesh and Assam are availing ST benefits in Tripura, despite not being recognized as Scheduled Tribes in their original states.

While noting that tribal organizations have already submitted grievances to the Chief Minister, Chief Secretary, DGP and the District Magistrate of Dhalai, Debbarma expressed disappointment that no suitable action has been initiated despite repeated representations. He stressed that the Ministry of Home Affairs had also issued directives on May 19, 2025, to the state government to take appropriate measures against illegal migrants.

The inquiry is lying pending for a prolonged period and unnecessary delays are only encouraging more infiltrations. I strongly urge the administration to take immediate action and submit an enquiry report at the earliest in the greater interest of national security and sovereignty of Tripura and India, Debbarma stated in his letter.
