An earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale jolted Tripura’s Unakoti district on Monday evening, triggering brief panic among residents but leaving no reports of casualties or property damage.

The National Centre for Seismology confirmed that the tremor was recorded at 8:27 pm IST, with its epicentre at latitude 24.31°N and longitude 91.99°E in Unakoti. The quake originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, making it perceptible across parts of the district and adjoining areas.

Although the intensity was categorised as mild, people in several localities rushed outdoors as the ground shook for a few seconds. Officials assured that the situation remains under control and no major damage has been reported.

Experts have reiterated that Tripura and much of the North East lie in one of India’s most seismically active zones, prone to recurring tremors of varying intensity. Authorities have urged citizens to remain cautious, follow basic safety protocols during earthquakes, and avoid spreading rumours.

Residents have also been advised to stay updated through official sources, including the government portal riseq.seismo.gov.in and the BhooKamp mobile application, which provide real-time earthquake alerts and safety guidelines.
