Around 136 families of surrendered militants, once linked to the outlawed All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), have reportedly occupied a stretch of forest land under Karbook subdivision. Officials confirmed that makeshift huts have been erected in the area without any formal allotment.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate Shyamjoy Jamatia said the matter has been referred to higher authorities since the land falls under the Forest Department’s jurisdiction. The District Magistrate has also been apprised of the situation.
On Monday, senior ATTF leaders including Rajesh Debbarma, Pohar Debbarma and Gandhi Debbarma visited the site and held a meeting with the families. Residents claimed that while no official notification has been issued, their leaders are in talks with the administration regarding settlement.
The resettlement process of surrendered militants has faced hurdles since the mass arms lay-down in September 2024. While the original agreement with the Centre put the number of militants at 584, leaders later pushed for recognition of over 1,000 cadres, fuelling disputes. Officials admit that final verification is still incomplete, leaving the process mired in uncertainty.
